Out of the Brambles
As part of the Foster-Woodstock Streetscape Enhancement Project, the Citizen
Advisory Committee (CAC) envisioned an art piece that would increase the
attractiveness of the Lents Town Center and help the area become a magnet for
economic development. The intent was to brighten the grey concrete wall of the
Lents Transit Station and provide some 'life' to the area along the multi-use path
at the Ramona Street cul-de-sac.
After a thorough review process, the CAC
selected metal sculptor Wayne Chabre's
proposal. Mr. Chabre specializes in
architectural and garden sculpture and has
several pieces throughout Portland, including
the Albina/Mississippi MAX Station and
Multnomah County Building. Using the CAC's
criteria and goals, and his knowledge of the
local community, Mr. Chabre developed the.
concept of a berry vine growing out of the concrete transit station wall
The concept of a wild mountain blackberry
vine, the only blackberry native to the Pacific
Northwest, evolved through the community's
resilience and resourceful nature. Picking
blackberries is a shared memory of Lents
community members -- the vine is
representative of the community's history and
tenacity.
The sculpture is hand-formed from aluminum and
colorfully powder-coated. The finished product will
be large in scale with flowers and clusters of
berries; an animated flowing vine pointing down
the multi-use path towards the platform stairs;
providing a sense of direction. The sculpture will
be a legacy whose symbolism can be used
throughout the Town Center to highlight its strength
and longevity.
Thank you for joining the Lents community in a dedication
Sunday, June 17, from 1:00 to 2:00, in conjunction with the
opening day of the Lents International Farmers Market.
